Command Vehicle

Command Vehicle

Unit #8821, is the Fire Command Vehicle, also known as a fire chief's car or fly car, is a car used by the senior officer of a fire department to respond to firefighting incidents. Its specialized markings clearly indicate the rank of the senior officer.

In the 19th century fire chief's vehicles were horse-drawn, and known as a chief's buggy. After 1900 most fire departments rapidly moved to the use of the automobile as the vehicle for the fire chief.

In the United States, modern Fire Command Vehicles are similar to police cars, and are equipped with lightbars, sirens and long-range and short-range radios along with other specialized equipment. Many fire departments use modified SUVs or Pickup Trucks as their Command Vehicles. The City of Reedsport purchased a Dodge Durango SUV in 2018, through grant funds, replacing the nearly 20 year old command vehicle previously used by the department.
