The City of Reedsport and the Oregon Department of Transportation are studying railroad crossing solutions and strategies to prepare for a potential increase in freight trains traveling through the downtown area.
Project Description and Purpose
With a new container terminal facility proposed at the Port of Coos Bay, more trains are expected to travel through Reedsport. Once complete, the study will identify railroad crossing improvements to support the following goals:
- Provide safe and efficient traffic flow for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and emergency services throughout Reedsport.
- Maintain the City’s crucial stormwater system with necessary improvements at railroad crossings.
- Enhance downtown livability with improvements that enable a “No Horn Ordinance.”
- Support economic development and sustainable growth in Reedsport and the region.
Upcoming Events:
The City Planning Commission and City Council will be holding public hearings to consider adopting the Reedsport Rail Crossing Study by reference into the City’s Transportation System Plan. A copy of the study can be reviewed here:

Public Advisory Committee
A Public Advisory Committee representing a broad set of community perspectives and interested government agencies will review materials and provide input throughout the study. The Public Advisory Committee will meet approximately four times at key milestones.

The project will host two online open houses to hear from the broader community as the study is developed.
